Kyphosis

Choreographic Commission from Michael Caldwell (Toronto) - September 2010

Kyphosis: curving of the spine that causes a bowing or rounding of the back, which leads to a hunchback or slouching posture

"I spent an extraordinary week with Michael Caldwell early in September 2010. I had agreed to the mentorship because I had a strong memory of Michael as an open, creatively generous and deeply committed young dancer. These impressions were confirmed in the recent mentoring process.

The key question for me was: what are Michael’s goals in this process and what methodology might we undertake to achieve those goals.

Our methodology was simple but very effective for both of us. I took the role of choreographer, Michael as performer, interpreter. I undertook to lay open my thinking processes and the rationale for choices. This involved rendering processes that were usually unconscious and intuitive into a conscious level that can be verbalized and articulated. It was a very demanding process for both of us and very rich. I learned about my own processes. I believe it was of great value to Michael as well.

We also came up with the seed form of what I think could be a very powerful solo piece “Kyphosis”, and showed to it to a very appreciative open studio audience,"
