Using both creation and performance, Karen Jamieson uncovers a mythic, poetic language through dance; believing the power of contemporary dance transcends cultures, languages, histories and traditions by connecting us all at a very primal level.
Karen Jamieson Dance under the artistic direction of Karen Jamieson was formed in 1983. A winner of the Chalmers Award, Karen Jamieson has created over 86 original dance works with original scores by over 20 respected Canadian composers, performed in Canada, Europe, Japan and the United States. Her work, Sisyphus was named one of the 10 Canadian choreographic masterworks of the 20th century and multi-year projects such as: Gawa Gyani, Stone Soup, The River, her collaboration with the Haida village of Skidegate BC and ongoing projects with the residents of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside are recognized nationally as groundbreaking in the field of community engaged and cross cultural dance.
The company recently created and performed Collision, an interdisciplinary, multileveled, site specific dance production; created through a collision of professional contemporary dancers, multicultural and multigenerational community dancers, composers, photographers, filmmakers, designers and Squamish Nation story-teller & dancers. The company is currently engaged in two 3 year projects: solo|soul and CONNECT (for residents of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside) and developing an intensive mentorship program for emerging dance artists in the field of community engaged dance.
